The Inner Runner

Last night I finished up this book.  I thought the second half was better than the first.  Overall, the book is really good but the last bit of it really made it a page turner for me.  Mostly because the author started speaking my language and I could really relate to what he said about running.  The book is meant to explain the power and beauty in the simple act of running and tells numerous stories throughout it.  It validated a lot of things that I had been thinking about lately.

I thought this page was great.  A lot of times you hear people call runners crazy because why would we want to go run for fun?  So I had to laugh when I came across this that said "There are some people-let's call them crazy-who don't like to run.  I know for you and me, it's hard to believe but they are out there."

I'm going to bullet point some of my favorite lines out of this book that I found to be completely true...and sums up running in an awesome way.  I think you really can relate this to just about any sport, not just running.

*"No matter what level of runner you are, devoting yourself to the journey of becoming a better runner strips you of the unnecessary baggage you clutter your life with.  There's no time for reality tv when you're on a mission.  The journey forces you to shut up, stop complaining, and stop making excuses for why you can't do it."

*"Committing to running creates a habit, not only of running, but of all the traits that it takes to be successful in all areas of your life, including discipline, devotion, and attitude."

*"Life is full of distractions that divert our attention away from what we're doing and what we want to accomplish....too much time is wasted performing tasks that don't lead to results.  Recognize the distractions in your life, what is urgent versus what is important, and work on limiting the distractions, so you can accomplish what you want."

*"One of the things running has taught me is that we have control over some things, but not all things.  We have control over how many miles we run.  We have control over our training to become better runners.  But we don't have control over many illnesses or injuries that take running away from us.  Part of being a runner is the ability to let go of the things you can't control and focus on the things you can."

*"Running is a chance to try.  To make an effort.  Whether it's to try to run longer, faster, easier, or smarter, there's an opportunity for every type of runner to try, from the beginner to the Olympian.  If you want to become a better runner, you need to get out of your comfort zone, physically and emotionally, and make an effort you have not made before.  There are consequences to our efforts.  If we try harder, we succeed more.  And success breeds motivation to try harder to succeed more."

*"We don't run for the t-shirt or the medal or to lose the five pounds around our waistline.  Not really, anyway.  Despite how shiny your marathon medal looks at it dangles from its post on your wall, the intrinsic rewards of running will always far outweigh the extrinsic ones.  Sure, we all like shiny medals.  But when the motivation and reason and discipline and desire to run and to be a better runner comes from inside of you, you have a much greater chance of success."

*"When it is you that drives you, the process and the effort mean so much more."

*"Runners do something very unique-we seek out discomfort.  Yet we get nervous and anxious about it.  We learn about ourselves when we're uncomfortable.  We are asked in no uncertain terms "What are you going to do right now?"  Few other times in our lives are we asked such a decisive question at such a decisive moment.  It's very revealing."

*"Running gives us the opportunity to seek out discomfort so that we may learn to deal with it, rise above it, and become hopeful about our future.  And that's very much like life."

*"Runners have an obsession with running that rivals most other obsessions, perhaps because runners truly believe that they are running toward who they want to be."

There are many more great parts of this book but those are some of my favorites.  This book was a great read on how running creates life lessons.  I'm sure runners and other athletes can completely relate to most of this book.  For non-runners this book helps explain why we are "crazy" and run for fun.

This weekend so far

So a few random things from this weekend.  These flowers...before they bloomed I honestly thought they were weeds.  I almost cut them down but I'm glad I didn't.  They are looking pretty!

So my flowers are looking better than ever!
I got super motivated to hand wash my car this weekend.  It took a long time but definitely I was able to get it way more clean and pretty than I can at any other car wash.  I'm pretty happy with it and it was a good way to get outside.

Just a friendly warning...do not buy Talenti gelato.  Trust me.  It's a bad thing to have in your house.  If I included it before in a favorite that is still correct.  However, I am warning you to not even try it.
I have been getting crazy at the gym and attempting swimming.  I bought a ridiculous overpriced swimsuit and have been enjoying going to the pool and hot tub a few times a week.  Today's purchase....the goggles.  We will see how this goes.

I have a few books I want to try to get into reading this weekend.  We will see if that happens or if I veg out in front of a movie.  Lots on my mind lately.  Ready to do clear my head!

Jay Dix 5k and same recent faves

Last weekend was the Jay Dix 5k.  We had a great morning for it.  The weather was beautiful and great temps.  This is always my favorite 5k.  It is the one that got me started running way back in 2009.  The course is perfect and I always enjoy running it with Glenda and Julie.

Next up is the Go Girl 5k on June 3rd.  It could be a hot day for it but that one is a lot of fun too.
A few recent food finds....I've always been a fan of Halo Top ice cream but it is pricey.  I recently found Enlightened at Gerbes and it is a lot cheaper.  It was 2.99 and buy one get one free.  I actually think it tastes better than Halo Top too!  The peanut butter chocolate chip and cookie dough are probably my favorite out of the flavors I tried.
These Sea Salt and Lime rice crisps...yum!  I will be buying more.  They are like the perfect snack to replace chips.
I discovered this hot sauce from Trader Joe's.  I just bought two more bottles yesterday.  If you like hot and spicy I highly recommend.

I completed my first week of working with my running coach this week.  I felt great at the start of the week but got a bit drained towards the end.  I ran around 13 miles this week and walked about 18.  Looking forward to improving with his program.

Meanwhile in Arizona...

Arizona is all like "It's not even hot yet."

Yes. It. Is.

Office Tourist

I am the one running around the hub snapping photos.  Because I am a tourist.  An office tourist.
So I thought I would share the Phoenix photos of the office.  The buildings are nice.
The elevators are high tech.
They may confuse a person upon the first visit.  You just pick the floor you are going to and it tells you what elevator to get on.  No more "Can you push 11 please?" Where are the other floors not listed?  I don't know.  It is a mystery.  Just like the mystery of why they decided to make the parking garage a ridiculous maze.
View from the 11th floor
Break area
 Pretty hallways
And wall decor
It is nicely decorated
You can walk around the lake at lunch.  Until about this time of year unless you like the heat.  There is not much shade.
I did find a bit of shade one day
I sat under the trees for a bit.  There are gnats that come off the water.  They like to come at you in a swarm causing you to go into ninja mode while everyone looks at you wondering what you are doing.
I call these the curtain pods.  Nobody knows the point of them but they are everywhere.
Looking out from my pod
Right before a gnat attack...
Another break area
And another

It is a pretty building.  I prefer the size of the office back home.  I can't even go into my feelings on the parking garage.  We do not get along.  Funny enough I get way less steps on this big campus than I do at home.  The bathroom is a lot closer to the room and you really don't go far from your area.  It makes me feel a bit lazy.  I have talked to a few people that love it here and a few that don't so much.  It was nice to visit but I am ready to head home and cuddle with my pup!

Day trip to Sedona

This weekend I took a drive up to Sedona after many people suggested it.  The key word here is "up."  Nobody really explained what getting there and getting around there entailed.  Had they done so I likely would not have gone.  I noticed right away that Arizona drivers are aggressive.  They make crazy Chicago cab drivers look like grandmas going for a Sunday drive.  The speed limit is 75 which means you are supposed to go 90.  Back home I go 75 when I am speeding so...I stayed in the slow lane.  So there is my first problem...the drivers and the speed.  Then came the elevation changes.  I knew it would be interesting when I saw the sign saying "stop ahead and check your brakes and load."  Right.  Then I saw the runaway truck lane.  "Runaway Truck Ramp."  This is when I really got worried.  That can't be good.  The drivers that were used to this flew down those curves and I crept down in my Hyundai Sonata rental car praying the brakes were in good shape and thinking I should have Googled how the hell to drive on a mountain.  Then came the sign that said "strong crosswind area."  I filed all this away to Google later.
I finally made it into Sedona and thought I was in the clear.  I guess my brain thought I could look at the rocks from the bottom of them.  I would soon learn I was mistaken. Sedona on a Saturday is a hot spot.  The town was absolutely packed.
I stopped in the Chamber of Commerce and talked to a sweet older man from Illinois who told me the best way to see Sedona in a day by car.  I wandered around town a bit after leaving there but it was too packed with people and it was really just touristy shops.  So I jumped in the car and proceeded to get completely lost on side streets.  I finally reached the main road and was heading the opposite direction than intended but that was ok because was of the stops on my list was the airport trail...so back to driving up a mountain.
This one wasn't too terrible and wasn't far.  I started down the Summit trail not realizing Summit meant up a darn rock.  But there were some stairs.  At first.  Then there were rocks that served as stairs along with a rope to hold onto.  I made it up and went straight to the center and sat down.  My stomach sank at the thought of going back down.  Like really sank.  A lot of people were all over near the edge of the rock and I was anxious enough in the middle.  Not a fan of heights.
After 10 or 15 minutes I worked up the courage to get back down.  I figured I just saw a pregnant lady do it I probably could too.  My plan was to drive 17 miles to scenic overlook then on the way back make my other stops.  In retrospect I should have thought "Scenic overlook probably means you have to get up to a higher location somehow...like oh, maybe drive up another mountain."  Nope, definitely would not have done this one had I known this drive that awaited me.  The mountain was high and steep and...a mountain.  Again some of the drivers were aggressive.  One guy even passed me and another car.  On a mountain. Seems like a bad idea.  Now the drive is beautiful.  Had I had a passenger they surely would have enjoyed it.  I was too busy making sure I stayed on the road to look around.  Eventually my thoughts about my rental changed from the brakes to wondering if I could even get enough power to get up the damn mountain.  Eventually I made it and took the photo above.  While pretty and all...that photo was not worth the stress of getting there.
I cut my trip a bit shorter than I had planned.  The traffic made getting to any of the locations quite lengthy and well...I just didn't want to after that mountain.  I was over it.  I am not a mountain driver.  I also didn't want to make the drive back in the dark because that drive is bad enough when I can see.  So...they are pretty but I am going to need a chaeuffer to take me on any site seeing like that in the future!

After returning to my hotel I Googled info on the drive including what the crosswind sign meant.  That means basically the wind can cause your car to rollover and for mountain driving you shouldn't ride your brakes or they can go out quicker.  I was thankful to be back in my hotel room and off the roads.

Sedona is stunning and would be neat to see for sure.  I just had to much stress with the drive.  However...aside from the drive I so recommend it!

Plan B

When you get to your hotel pool and find out it sits right in front of the hotel restaurant window like art...you move on to Plan B in an attempt to not be the subject of the restaurant attendees people watching.
Plan B: Desert Botanical Garden.  Plan B was a success.

I arrived around noon AZ time today after having enough of crammed planes and people with no airplane etiquette.  I wanted to make use of the afternoon and the garden was a great way to spend the afternoon experiencing Arizona.
I found Alvin.  He was cute and seemed to like me.
I found all sorts of blooming cactus. What is the plural of that...cacti?
I finally got to experience the "dry heat."

 I loved the butterfly garden.
These guys were all kinds of fluttery.

I really do like exploring solo.  Especially after a morning of traveling.  And I have no shame in taking my solo exploration selfies as I do it!
